Fluorescent Ruby in White Matrix
Fluorescent Ruby in White Matrix

Deep, purplish-pink ruby gathers in a white matrix, with smaller pink flecks scattered around it. Joun is drawn to the contrast between white and rose—a clear distinction that makes the ruby easy to observe within its surrounding rock.
The rough specimen has an uneven, blocky form, with an angular ruby exposed at the front. Some ruby faces are lustrous, catching the light in bright reflections against the matrix.
This piece comes from the Jegdalek ruby deposit in Surobi District, Kabul, Afghanistan. Ruby is the chromium-colored variety of corundum; here, the interest lies in observing its crystal form in matrix rather than as a cut gemstone.
A UV light offers another way to view this specimen, revealing the ruby’s fluorescence. Keep exposure brief, and avoid directing UV light toward your eyes or skin. In ordinary light, a simple, uncluttered setting gives the white and rose-colored contrast room to stand out.
