Astrophyllite is a rare brown to golden-bronze mineral known for its slender, radiating crystals and distinctive metallic luster. Its name comes from the Greek words for “star” and “leaf,” reflecting the star-like sprays formed by its bladed crystals.
This polished specimen comes from the Khibiny Mountains on Russia’s Kola Peninsula, a mineral-rich region within the Arctic Circle. The Khibiny Massif is known for an extraordinary diversity of minerals, while the nearby town of Apatity has long been closely connected with the region’s mining and mineralogical history.
Astrophyllite is naturally soft and fragile, with perfect cleavage, so polished pieces that can be comfortably handled offer a different way to appreciate a mineral more often encountered in matrix specimens or slabs.
I acquired this piece from a dealer in Apatity in February 2022. When I first saw these specimens, I had the immediate feeling that I should secure them while I still could.
Part of the reason was simple: genuine astrophyllite in a well-finished, hand-sized form is not something I often encounter. I was also aware that other dark, fibrous minerals are sometimes offered commercially under the astrophyllite name, so obtaining specimens from a source close to the Khibiny region was especially meaningful to me.
This is not a stone that tries to be universally beautiful. It is dark, opaque and visually complex, and I suspect it will always divide opinion. That individuality is precisely what I find compelling.
Under direct light, the bronze and copper-toned crystals suddenly flash from within the darker body. Their scattered reflections remind me of senko-hanabi, the delicate Japanese sparklers whose tiny sparks crackle outward for only a moment.
I do not think this is a specimen that should simply disappear into a cabinet. Its character appears through movement. Hold it beneath a lamp or illuminate it with a small flashlight, slowly changing the angle, and different metallic reflections emerge one after another.
I acquired my Khibiny astrophyllite specimens between 2021 and February 2022. Since then, pieces of this kind have become considerably more difficult for me to source. I would like to obtain more someday, although I cannot say when that opportunity will come again.
