Pietersite Oval Cabochon with Blue-White Chatoyancy

An almost-black navy ground carries diagonal strokes of blue-grey, their direction and thickness changing across this elongated oval cabochon. Its domed, polished surface catches the light, while a wavering blue-white sheen shifts with the viewing angle.

For Joun, that moving chatoyancy is the piece’s particular appeal. The pattern recalls overlapping brushstrokes: some passages brighten under the light while others recede into the dark ground.

This pietersite comes from Hopewell Farm 240, Outjo, in Namibia’s Kunene Region. Pietersite is a chalcedony-based material rather than a separate mineral species. Its characteristic chatoyancy arises from fibrous amphibole-bearing structures arranged in irregular fields, rather than the continuous parallel bands associated with classic tiger’s-eye.

For viewing, use light from one direction and change your angle slowly. Look closely at the boundaries between the blue-grey strokes and navy areas, comparing how each section catches the light. A quiet place on a display surface gives these subtle changes room to hold your attention.

Clean gently with a soft, damp cloth and protect the polished surface from hard impacts. Keep the stone intact; avoid drilling, sanding, or other work that creates mineral dust.
