Nuummite often reveals more in person than it allows a camera to record. Across this specimen, reflective areas emerge only at particular angles, creating a depth that changes as the stone or light moves.
Joun notes that some flashes can remain unnoticed until a different day or viewing position brings them into view. This gradual discovery is part of the appeal: the specimen does not present every detail at once.
This piece comes from Nuuk in Sermersooq, Greenland, the locality that gave nuummite its name. The rock is composed principally of the amphiboles gedrite and anthophyllite, whose fine intergrowth produces its characteristic iridescence.
Nuummite from Greenland has an exceptionally long geological history, originating in Archean material later transformed by successive metamorphic events. Placed where changing light can reach it, this specimen rewards slow and repeated observation.
