Polished Selenite with a Clouded White Center

A rounded, irregular oval of polished selenite from Mexico, with a cloudy white center and translucent edges. Its colorless-to-white tones give it the appearance of ice misted at the center—an impression noted by Joun.

The glossy surface catches light in a white, luminous sheen, with a fine reflection along the lower edge. This reflected shimmer, described as a schiller effect, offers a contrast to the softly clouded interior. Selenite is a variety of gypsum.

Some cracks are present. They are part of this piece’s condition and should be considered alongside its polish and translucency.

Try placing it against a dark background to compare the white center with the more transparent perimeter. Soft light from the side can bring attention to its rounded outline and surface reflections.

Handle and store this delicate specimen gently to prevent scratches. Avoid direct sunlight and do not wash it with water; wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth.
