Purple tones flow around a black band crossing the center of this hand-polished sugilite from Northern Cape, South Africa. A metallic-looking area at the center contrasts with the surrounding color, while reddish-brown flecks toward the lower portion and fine white lines add detail to the surface.
The elongated oval has a rounded center and a slightly convex back, rather than the flat underside of a conventional cabochon. Its smooth, glossy polish brings the color gradients into focus.
Joun selected this piece because he felt he seldom encountered sugilite this beautiful. The gradients were a particular attraction, along with the natural complexity of material that is not visually uniform. The contrasting areas are part of that appeal; their individual mineral identities have not been established here.
A piece to study in the palm of your hand or keep as a specimen near your desk, where its details can invite a closer look. Handle gently, keep out of direct sunlight, and wipe with a soft cloth rather than washing with water.
