A small green emerald crystal held in contrasting brown matrix, preserved as a natural specimen from Panjshir, Afghanistan.
Emerald is the green variety of beryl, colored by trace amounts of chromium or, in some cases, vanadium. In this piece, the crystal remains connected to its host rock, keeping the mineral within its geological setting rather than presenting it as a cut gemstone.
The specimen traveled from Afghanistan to Namak Mandi, the mineral and gemstone market in Peshawar, Pakistan. In 2020, Joun selected it from the supplier’s extensive inventory. It then departed Islamabad for Japan, arriving at EARTH RIVER approximately one month later.
Its compact scale gives this long route a quiet sense of contrast: a small mineral object carried from the Hindu Kush, through a border market, and finally into a room in Japan.
