Moldavite is a natural impact glass formed approximately 14.8 million years ago, when a massive meteorite impact in what is now southern Germany melted and ejected terrestrial material into the atmosphere.

The molten material traveled through the air, changing shape as it moved and cooled before eventually falling across parts of Central Europe.

For me, this history is one of the most fascinating things about moldavite.

Years ago, I sent a faceted moldavite pendant to a gemological laboratory in Tokyo for identification.

Some time later, an older staff member from the laboratory called me and said, “The green pendant appears to be glass — would you like us to test whether it is natural?”

That was, of course, exactly why I had sent it.

Two weeks later, the sorting report arrived with the words “Natural Glass — Moldavite,” along with an additional X-ray fluorescence analysis.

I had already noticed small bubbles inside the stone before sending it for testing, so I was not especially worried, but I still remember how strangely satisfying it was to see the result in writing.

What I enjoy most about moldavite becomes visible when it is examined closely.

Under a loupe, the interior can reveal bubbles and subtle flowing structures that seem to preserve the movement of material that was once molten.

To me, it looks almost as though a moment from an ancient impact event was interrupted and preserved inside the glass.

This small pendant top presents that extraordinary material in a simple, wearable form.

Its restrained size makes it easy to enjoy on a short outing, while also making it perfectly suitable for wearing casually at home.

Because moldavite is natural glass, it should be protected from strong impacts and hard surfaces, but with normal care it can be enjoyed as both jewelry and a small geological specimen.
