Brookite Crystal with Red-Orange Edges
Brookite Crystal with Red-Orange Edges

A thin, plate-like brookite crystal with a strong luster. The central and upper areas are deep brown, approaching black, while red-orange color appears along both side edges. These translucent margins give the crystal the appearance of dark glass edged with warmer color.
Fine vertical striations run across the broad face, catching and reflecting light strongly. The upper edge is flat, while the lower edge ends at an angle. Joun describes its presence as forceful—a personal impression that sits well with the contrast between its thin form and assertive reflections.
This is a brookite crystal in its own right, rather than brookite enclosed in quartz. It comes from the Ras Koh Mountains in Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan. Brookite is a form of titanium dioxide with a crystal structure distinct from those of rutile and anatase.
For closer viewing, use a loupe to follow the fine striations, with soft light directed from the side to explore the reflections across the face. This also offers a way to appreciate the contrast between the dark center and translucent edges.
Handle carefully as a mineral specimen: brookite is brittle. Keep it away from direct sunlight and water, and wipe gently with a soft cloth when needed.
