Pale lilac crystals overlap across a white to light grey, granular matrix in this rough hackmanite from Badakhshan, Afghanistan. The purple varies in depth, with partial translucency and bright reflections across broader crystal faces. To Joun, it suggests hackmanite emerging from a clump of snow.
Angular faces contrast with the finer, uneven texture of the surrounding matrix. Soft light from the side offers a way to compare these surfaces, while a loupe invites closer observation of the overlapping crystals and subtle shifts in purple.
This specimen fluoresces under UV light, then retains a deeper body color for a while afterward. That lingering color change is tenebrescence, or reversible photochromism—the defining property of hackmanite, a variety of sodalite. It is distinct from fluorescence, which is the light emitted during UV illumination.
Joun particularly recommends this piece for those who want to observe that difference firsthand. Keep UV sessions brief, use appropriate protective equipment, and avoid direct exposure of eyes and skin to the light.
