Hydrangea Blue-Violet Tanzanite Rough from Merelani Hills

This angular tanzanite rough has a blue-violet color that Joun compares to hydrangea petals. Slightly translucent areas interrupt the deeper color, giving the crystal a varied appearance as the viewing angle changes.

Its substantial, tapering outline brings together flat areas resembling crystal faces and more finely textured, intricate surfaces. These contrasting structures reward close observation without distracting from the specimen’s quiet color.

Tanzanite is the blue-violet variety of zoisite. This specimen comes from the Merelani Hills in Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania.

Tanzanite in the gem trade is commonly heated to bring forward its blue-violet tones, although the treatment status of this individual specimen is not stated. Joun often prefers materials with minimal intervention, yet finds the conventional heating of tanzanite compatible with its beauty when the result does not feel forced. This is a personal response to the material rather than a judgment about treatment in general.

It can be placed in a specimen case beside a desk or given a quiet corner of a shelf. After finding a stable orientation, a soft lining or small support can help present its outline and color clearly.

Keep it away from direct sunlight to help preserve its color. Avoid routine washing; remove dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
