Rich pink gathers across a white to colorless ground, extending from the upper right toward the center. Dark gray-green patches punctuate the left side. For Joun, the appeal lies in the beautiful cherry-blossom pink—a pattern that suggests red color seeping through ice.
The irregular, roughly triangular form narrows toward the top. Parts are translucent, while fine surface irregularities catch bright reflections. A loupe offers a closer view of the boundaries between the pink areas and the darker patches.
This tugtupite comes from the Kuannersuit Plateau (Kvanefjeld), in the Ilímaussaq complex of Kujalleq, Greenland. Joun considers it a fortunate acquisition, imported directly from Greenland several years ago.
Tugtupite is a beryllium aluminium silicate known for tenebrescence, a reversible change in color in response to light. This specimen is noted to show that behavior, adding another aspect to its changing appearance.
Handle gently and keep out of direct sunlight. Viewed in the palm or placed where it can be examined closely, its contrasting patches invite slow attention.
