This sugilite specimen from Northern Cape, South Africa, has a varied violet ground crossed by white granular markings. Near the center, a dark gray area introduces a deeper contrast, giving the mottled pattern a quiet sense of depth.
Its rounded, irregular outline retains the fine unevenness of a natural rough surface. Small areas catch the light as the viewing angle changes, while the mixture of violet, white, and near-black gray rewards close observation.
Sugilite is a cyclosilicate mineral most often found in massive rather than well-formed crystalline material. This piece presents that character in an approachable form suited to a desk, shallow display case, or small specimen setting. Because its stability is difficult to confirm, a soft lining or suitable mineral stand may offer more secure support.
Keep it away from strong impacts and contact with harder specimens. Remove dust gently with a soft, dry cloth or brush, and avoid washing it with water or leaving it in direct sunlight.
