Rough Sapphire with Blue Flecks and Matrix

Deep blue flecks scatter across a white to pale gray ground in this rough sapphire from Pakistan. The distribution of color recalls blue ink dropped onto a shard of ice, with translucency in the pale areas and certain faces catching the light strongly.

The irregular form broadens at one end and extends toward the other, with angular rises and recesses across its surface. A little matrix remains attached. A yellow-brown area marks part of one side, and a faint metallic-looking detail appears near the matrix; its identity is not established.

Joun selected this piece specifically for its rough, natural appearance rather than the refinement of a cut gemstone. To him, it has a strong presence—a way to encounter sapphire as mineral material, before the familiar language of jewelry.

Sapphire is a variety of corundum. Here, the contrast between the deep blue patches and the pale surrounding material invites close attention. A loupe offers a closer view of the boundaries between them.

Display away from direct sunlight, somewhere the angular surface and scattered color can be appreciated at an unhurried pace.
