This piece of Kingman turquoise remains joined to its host rock, preserving the character of material taken directly from its geological setting. Joun notes that its color leans toward light blue rather than the greener tones also associated with Kingman material.
Kingman turquoise comes from the Mineral Park mining area of northwestern Arizona. Turquoise is a hydrated copper-aluminum phosphate that forms as a secondary mineral in the weathered portions of copper-bearing deposits.
The specimen was acquired around 2020 from Native American sellers in the United States and was represented as part of their older stock. It was supplied as natural Kingman turquoise; its precise mining date and treatment history are not documented.
The meeting of turquoise and matrix gives the piece an unrefined, geological presence suited to a quiet shelf or mineral display.
Care
Handle gently and avoid water, prolonged sunlight, oils, cosmetics, and household chemicals. To reduce contact with skin oils, hold and move the specimen with a clean, soft cloth.
