This polished carnelian pebble has a remarkably vivid color for an unenhanced natural specimen. Its clear orange tone carries a slight resemblance to Japanese shu-iro, a warm vermilion traditionally seen in lacquerware and architectural details.
Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony colored by iron oxides. This piece comes from Bobonong in Botswana’s Central District, an area also known for Botswana agate.
The saturated color gives the pebble a distinct presence in a room. Joun suggests placing it near an entrance or in a shared space, where its warmth can act as a small visual accent.
Carnelian is relatively straightforward to care for. It may be rinsed with water, but prolonged exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided.
