At first glance, this obsidian appears almost completely solid: a dense, polished-looking black that quietly anchors the space around it. Its hidden character emerges when illuminated from behind, revealing a surprisingly translucent smoky brown within the darkness.
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools rapidly, allowing little crystal growth. It is therefore an igneous rock and mineraloid rather than a true crystalline mineral. Its glass-like structure also produces exceptionally sharp edges when fractured, which led to its long history as a material for cutting tools.
What interests me most is the contrast between its opaque appearance and the warm transparency revealed by light. Viewed normally, it has a restrained presence; backlighting transforms it into something softer and more atmospheric.
Place it on a shelf or display surface where a small light can reach it from behind. As obsidian is brittle and may form sharp edges if chipped, handle it with care.
